Wairewa Research Project - Image Gallery
Wairewa is a place of great beauty. Here we have collected images from the area to demonstrate that beauty.
Te Roto o Wairewa/Lake Forsyth
The lake is the centre of Wairewa. This section contains picture of the lake from many different angles.
Other sites of interest
Within the takiwa of Wairewa (the traditional area of influence of the two hapu who make up Wairewa Runanga) there are other areas of interest as illustrated here.
Tuna heke - traditional harvest of eels from the lake
Wairewa is also a place of huge cultural significance, included here are some images from the annual tuna heke, a cultural harvest that has continued for centuries.
Cyano-bacterial bloom
Unfortunately there is a less savoury side to the lake: the cyano-bacterial blooms that sometimes occur during the late summer
Landscape art
In 2003 a group of students from Lincoln University carried out a project looking at how Māori culture and art could be projected into the landscape. This collection shows some of the innovative ideas that came from that exercise.
